Frozen Pipe Repair details
Shut off the main and call. We stop the water, repair the burst line with new pipe and check the run for the next weak spot, 24 hours a day.
Quick answer: Close the main water shutoff right away. In most Philadelphia rowhomes it is at the front of the basement near the water meter. Turn it clockwise until it stops. Then turn off electricity to any wet area if you can do it safely, open a low faucet to drain the lines and call a burst pipe plumber. Take photos for your insurance company.
A burst pipe can release a large amount of water in a short time, soaking ceilings, floors and walls. The first thing to do is close the main water shutoff. In most Philadelphia rowhomes it sits in the front of the basement near the meter, where the service line comes through the wall. Then call a burst pipe plumber. Fullerton Plumbing responds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we dispatch the nearest available technician. Every minute the water runs adds to the damage, so speed matters. Do not wait to see if it slows down.
Pipes burst for a few reasons: freezing, corrosion, high water pressure and physical damage. Freezing is the classic winter cause, but in older homes, rusted galvanized steel and pinholed copper give out year round. When we repair a burst, we cut out the damaged section, replace it with new pipe and fittings, restore water and test for leaks. We also look at the pipe on either side, because a line that burst from corrosion is usually weak in other places too. If the house needs more than a patch, we will tell you.

We confirm the main or branch shutoff is closed, drain the lines and make the area safe. If the main valve is old and will not close fully, we can shut water at the curb or replace the valve so you have a working shutoff.
Some bursts are obvious. Others are inside a wall or ceiling where water travels before it shows. We find the actual break, open the smallest area needed and check the pipe material and condition on both sides of it. We also note any other pipe that looks close to failing.
We cut out the damaged section and replace it with new copper or PEX, using proper transition fittings where we meet old galvanized steel. You get an upfront quote before the repair starts, including any extra sections that need replacing.
We restore water, pressure test the repair and check for other leaks. If freezing caused the burst, we talk about insulation, heat tape or rerouting the line. We clean up the work area before we leave. Then we confirm your main shutoff works for next time.
Philadelphia winters bring a few hard cold snaps every year, usually in January and February, and that is when we see the most bursts. The classic spot is the back addition of a rowhome: the kitchen or bathroom built onto the rear of the house, with water lines running along an exterior wall or over an unheated crawl space. When the temperature drops into the teens, those lines freeze, and when they thaw, a split pipe lets go. Vacant units, second homes and rental properties with the heat turned down are also at risk. Pipes near basement windows and front walls that take the wind are at risk too.
Corrosion causes bursts year round. Many pre 1950s rowhomes still have galvanized steel supply lines that rust from the inside and thin out at the threads. Copper from later decades can pinhole, especially where water is hard. If your home has had more than one burst or leak in a short time, a section or whole house repipe is often the more economical answer. We can price that alongside the immediate repair so you can plan, and we always restore water to the house as quickly as possible after a burst.
Burst pipe repair cost depends on where the break is, how hard it is to reach and what the pipe is made of. A split line in an open basement ceiling is quicker than one inside a finished wall or over a back addition crawl space. Old galvanized pipe may need a longer section replaced or a transition to new material. A failed main shutoff may need replacing too. Nights and weekends can be a factor. We give you an upfront quote before the repair starts.

Back additions on Philadelphia rowhomes were often built with less insulation than the main house, and the kitchen or bathroom water lines run along exterior walls or over unheated crawl spaces. In a hard freeze those lines get cold enough to freeze solid. Ice expands, the pipe splits and when it thaws the water pours out. Insulating or rerouting those lines prevents repeat bursts.
A short section can be cut out and replaced with new copper or PEX using proper transition fittings. But galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside along its whole length, so a burst often means the rest of the line is thin too. If you have had repeated leaks, we may recommend replacing the run or repiping the house instead of patching one spot at a time.
Yes, once the break is repaired the source stops. Water already in the ceiling may keep dripping for a while as it drains out. We open the ceiling only where needed to reach the pipe, and you should let the area dry fully before patching drywall to avoid mold. We can point out what needs drying when we finish.
Insulate pipes on exterior walls and in crawl spaces, keep cabinet doors under kitchen sinks open on very cold nights, let a faucet on an exterior wall drip slightly during deep freezes and never turn the heat down too low in a vacant home. Shut off and drain outside hose bibs in the fall. For lines that freeze every year, rerouting them is the lasting fix.
